About this URL Encoder / Decoder

Encode text for URLs or decode URL-encoded strings directly in your browser.

Your text is processed locally in the browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored.

Percent-encoding follows RFC 3986 §2. Full URI mode (encodeURI) leaves URI-reserved characters (: / ? # [ ] @) unescaped; component mode (encodeURIComponent) escapes them too.

FAQ

What's the difference between encodeURI and encodeURIComponent?

Full URI mode runs encodeURI, which leaves URI-reserved characters (: / ? # [ ] @) unescaped since they're structural. Component mode runs encodeURIComponent, which escapes those too — the right choice for a single query parameter's value rather than a whole URL.

Why are spaces sometimes shown as + and sometimes %20?

%20 is standard percent-encoding for a space, and it's what this tool always produces. + is specific to the application/x-www-form-urlencoded format used by HTML forms — a different encoding this tool doesn't use, so don't treat the two as interchangeable.

Is URL encoding the same as HTML encoding?

No — URL encoding protects characters inside a URL; HTML encoding protects characters inside HTML markup. Use the HTML Entity Encoder for the latter.

Does this handle non-ASCII characters like accents, emoji, or CJK text?

Yes — non-ASCII text is converted to UTF-8 bytes first, then each byte is percent-encoded.

Can I decode an encoded URL to inspect a query string?

Yes — paste the encoded value and decode it to see the readable text.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No — 100% client-side.
